Cadet Scholarship Scheme

The Scottish Gliding Centre's Cadet Scholarship Scheme supports the development of young glider pilots by helping reduce the cost of learning to fly.

Established through the generosity of Club members, the Scheme provides financial assistance to a limited number of Cadets (Junior Members under the age of 18) who demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm and potential.

The Scheme exists to encourage the long-term development of young pilots and future volunteers within the Scottish Gliding Centre.

The Scheme aims to:

• encourage regular participation in gliding;
• develop safe, competent and confident pilots;
• support personal development through coaching and mentoring;
• encourage volunteering and participation in Club activities; and
• help young members achieve their individual flying goals.

Successful applicants receive:

• a 70% reduction on the cost of annual Junior membership fees, in accordance with the Scottish Gliding Centre's published
  tariffs;
• a 50% reduction in flying airtime charges, in accordance with the Scottish Gliding Centre's published tariffs;
• coaching and mentoring through the Cadet & Junior programme; and
• opportunities to participate in Cadet & Junior activities throughout the year.

The Scheme is normally limited to 10 Cadets (Junior Members under the age of 18) at any one time.

Once the Scheme is fully subscribed, further applications will be considered when places become available.

Applicants must:

• be a Junior Member of the Scottish Gliding Centre (or enrolled on a Learn to Glide Package);
• be aged 13–17;
• demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm for gliding;
• be willing to participate regularly in Club activities; and
• complete the Scholarship application process.

Scholarship holders are expected to:

• attend the Club regularly;
• participate in flying and ground training;
• volunteer and assist with normal Club activities appropriate to their experience;
• behave responsibly and act as positive ambassadors for the Scottish Gliding Centre; and
• comply with Club rules, safeguarding procedures and the Airfield Manual.

Scholarship places are reviewed periodically to ensure the Scheme continues to support members who demonstrate commitment and active participation.

Scholarship holders should advise the Honorary Cadet & Junior Lead if there is any significant change in their circumstances which may affect their participation in the Scheme.
